"As near as I can tell, there seems to be a debate about how tough the pharaoh will be, and how fast the Egyptians will be able to rush.
The pharaoh is a MAJOR economic boost for his civilization, and you get his benefit instantly at the game start. The Norse have nothing comparable. The Greeks don't either, but at least they get an extra villager.
The Norse are indeed very good at rushing, but the Egyptians are good at rushing too. In fact, I would say that an Egyptian player can probably get off a rush earlier than the Norse, though it won't be as powerful."
"Francophone – We have doubt about the egyptian ability to resist to a rush and to rush themselves, coz Gamespot had compare this civilisation to Teutonic in AoK and if Teutonic have a good economy and good towers, they aren't very good in early game and at feudal rush. But now you confirm something that some of us guess : Pharao is very great !
Sandy – none of the civs in AoM are slow like the Teutons or Byzantines in AoK. We have finally learned that all civs MUST have something good they can do in the early game. Though we also like giving them good things in the middle and late game.
Francophone – You say : "The Greeks (...) get an extra villager". We already know (since Showcase Zeus) they begin with 3 villies + 1 scout and (since Showcase Thor) Norse begin with 2 villies + cox + ulfsark. Do you mean Egyptian only have 2 villies + 1 pharaoh at the beginning of a game ? Do they have a scout unit or pharaoh needs to do this job ?
Sandy – the Egyptians start out with a pharaoh AND a priest, plus their villagers. Usually the priest goes scouting. The priest is not as good a scout as the Greek one, but he can do more things. Most of the things the priest can do are compatible with early scouting, though."
1) the pharaoh adds a major boost to the early game, especially when most of your villagers are all working out of the same building.
2) your starting priest also has benefits that help you out right from the start. Ra's priest, for instance, can empower villagers just like a pharaoh. Even if you never train any more priests, this gives you TWO empowered sites from the start.
3) you don't have to waste villager time on gathering favor -- once the monuments are built, they just keep scooping up the favor automatically.
4) some other HUGE reasons for Egyptian speed have not been released yet. (For instance, no economic Egyptian God Powers have been described yet - these are quite nice however.)
1) 3 starting villagers instead of 2.
2) They have the best early scouting capacity of any culture. They therefore are the likeliest to find herd animals, wild animals, other food sources, the best spots for dropsites, and so forth. Very nice.
1) their villagers don't have to spend time laying down foundations. All their time can be spent gathering. Also so they don't need to use villagers to lay down buildings near an enemy town (i.e., their soldiers can do it).
2) they start with a dropsite (the oxcart). This gives them two places to drop off resources from the start of the game (their town center is the other one). And since their dropsite can move. So when moving to a new resource site, they don't need to first lay down a foundation and build something. They just move right on over. This saves a lot of resources otherwise needed for dropsites."
